How to dilute essential oils

A dilution percentage is the share of essential oil in the finished blend. Using a standard drop size, the number of drops is:

Drops = carrier (mL) ร— drops per mL ร— (dilution % รท 100)

The default is 20 drops per mL. For 1 oz (โ‰ˆ30 mL) of carrier, a 1% blend is 6 drops, 2% is 12 drops, and 3% is 18 drops โ€” an easy sanity check.

Worked example

For 30 mL of carrier at 2%: 30 ร— 20 ร— 0.02 = 12 drops of essential oil, which is about 0.6 mL.

Frequently asked questions

โ€บHow many drops of essential oil per oz for a 2% dilution?

At the common estimate of 20 drops per mL, 1 oz (about 30 mL) of carrier at 2% needs 30 ร— 20 ร— 0.02 = 12 drops of essential oil. 1% would be 6 drops, and 3% would be 18 drops.

โ€บWhat is the essential oil dilution formula?

Drops of essential oil = carrier volume (mL) ร— drops per mL ร— (dilution % รท 100). The default is 20 drops per mL, though drop size varies by oil and dropper.

โ€บWhat is a safe dilution for essential oils?

General guidance: 1% for face, sensitive skin, children and the elderly; 2% for daily body use; 3% for a targeted, short-term area. Always follow the guidance for the specific oil and patch-test first โ€” this calculator is for convenience, not medical advice.

โ€บHow many drops are in a mL?

Roughly 20 drops per mL is the common rule of thumb, but it depends on the oil viscosity and the orifice reducer. You can change the drops-per-mL value in the calculator if your oil differs.
